Richard Abcarian

Richard Abcarian (PhD, University of California, Berkeley) is a professor of English emeritus at California State University, Northridge, where he taught for thirty-seven years. During his teaching career, he won two Fulbright professorships. In addition to editing Literature: The Human Experience and its compact edition, he is the editor of a critical edition of Richard Wright's A Native Son, as well as several other literature textbooks.

Jessica Abel

Winner of both the Harvey and Lulu Awards for Best New Talent in 1997, Jessica Abel is the author of Soundtrack and Mirror, Window, two comic collections culled from her comic book series, Artbabe. Her La Perdida (Pantheon, 2006) won the Harvey Award for Best New Series and was excerpted in 2006’s Best American Comics. She resides in Brooklyn, NY.

John Aberth

John Aberth lives in Roxbury, Vermont, and teaches history at Vermont's Castleton State College, where he formerly served as associate academic dean. He has taught history at a number of other institutions, including Middlebury College, the University of Vermont, St. Michael's College, the University of Nebraska, and Norwich University. He received his PhD in Medieval History from Cambridge University in England, and has published several books, including Churchmen in the Age of Edward III: The Case of Bishop Thomas de Lisle (1996); From the Brink of the Apocalypse: Confronting Famine, War, Plague and Death (2000); and A Knight at the Movies: Medieval History on Film (2003).

Mark Abrahamson

Mark Abrahamson has been a professor of sociology at the University of Connecticut since 1976 and has also served that university in a variety of adminstrative positions.  He is a former Program Director (for Sociology) at the National Science Foundation and was a professor of sociology at Syracuse University before moving to Connecticut.  His main scholarly interests are in classical theory and urban sociology.  He has authored more than 30 papers and one dozen books, most recently including Global Cities (Oxford University Press, 2004).

Robert H. Abzug

Robert H. Abzug (Ph.D. University of California, Berkeley) is Professor of History and American Studies, Audre and Bernard Rapoport Regents Chair of Jewish Studies, and founding director of the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. His research and teaching interests focus on American cultural history, history of psychology and religion, and the history of the Holocaust. His major publications include Cosmos Crumbling: American Reform and the Religious Imagination;  Inside the Vicious Heart: Americans and the Liberation of Nazi Concentration Camps; and Passionate Liberator: Theodore Dwight Weld and the Dilemma of Reform.

Malcolm Adams

Malcolm Adams is a Professor of Mathematics and the Mathematics Department Head at the University of Georgia, where he also held the General Sandy Beaver Teaching Professorship from 2005-2008. He received is B.A. in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Oregon in 1978, and he earned his PhD in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1982. Professor Adams's research interests focus on differential equations, especially in applications to biology and physics, and he has published another textbook, Measure Theory and Probability, with Victor Guillemin. Outside of the university, he enjoys running, traveling, and hiking with his wife and three children.

Colin Adams

Colin Adams is the Thomas T. Read Professor of Mathematics at Williams College, where he has taught since 1985. He has produced a number of books that make mathematics more accessible and relatable, including How to Ace Calculus and its sequel, How to Ace the Rest of Calculus; Riot at the Calc Exam and other Mathematically Bent Stories; and Zombies & Calculus. Colin co-wrote and appears in the videos "The Great Pi vs. E Debate" and "Derivative vs. Integral: the Final Smackdown."

Adams received his undergraduate degree from MIT and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He had held various grants for research in the area of knot theory and low-dimensional topology and has published numerous research articles. He received the Haimo National Distinguished Teaching Award from the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in 1998, and the Robert Foster Cherry Teaching Award in 2003. Adams also served as MAA Polya Lecturer (1998-2000), and as Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer (2000-2002).

Linda Adler-Kassner

Linda Adler-Kassner is Professor of Writing and Director of the Writing Program at University of California, Santa Barbara. She is author, coauthor, or coeditor of seven books, including The Activist WPA: Changing Stories About Writing and Writers (Utah State University Press, 2008), which won the 2010 Council of Writing Program Administrators Best Book Award. Her latest book, coauthored with Peggy O'Neill, is Reframing Writing Assessment to Improve Teaching and Learning (Utah State University Press, 2010). She is also the author of over thirty articles and book chapters.

Claire D. Advokat

Claire Advokat received her Ph.D. in physiological psychology from Rutgers University, following which she completed an NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York City. She then served on the faculty of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Illinois Health Sciences Center in Chicago. In 1989 she joined the Department of Psychology at Louisiana State University, where she served as the Faculty Senate President (2004–2005), retiring in 2012 as an emerita professor. Her research area is psychopharmacology, specifically drugs used in the treatment of psychiatric and behavioral disorders. She has published over 80 articles, and received funding for her studies from the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Spencer Foundation, the Board of Regents of Louisiana, the State of Louisiana, and the pharmaceutical firm NPS. She received a university teaching award in 2005, served as an ad hoc reviewer for 20 journals, and serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Attention Disorders.
